For the last few decades, technology has revolutionised how we communicate, do our daily jobs and interact with others. This includes the internet, mobile technology and many other superior technologies. Things are easier and more interesting. Fair to say at this pace, the best is yet to come. The education sector is still struggling to catch up with educators slowly adopting new technology-based teaching methodologies to pass knowledge to learners effectively.

There is still much to do in the education sector. Nonetheless, much has changed regarding how students learn in and out of class, and this has been highly beneficial. Through technology innovations, reality-based learning/teaching approach is for sure the next big thing in the education system.

Learning is a very complicated and involved process. Students are required to gain and retain knowledge. Then, apply the stored knowledge to solve challenges in their real world. The current education system is still a mutual challenge to both learners and educators. Albeit, it works to some extent.  The tradition has always been about putting learners together based on their age. Reality-based education is here to change this notion which will benefit both learners and educators.

Effective learning occurs when the learner appreciates the new information and stores it in their long-term memory. For this to happen, the learning process must be exciting to the learners. It must be experiential, personalised and relevant in accordance with the learners past and current environment. This is the additive that reality-based technology brings to the learning process. Though reality-based learning has been used chiefly in science labs, new technology will bring a lot of new experience that will make learning more practical than ever. Modern reality-based education technologies include:

  • Virtual-reality.
  • Mixed Reality.
  • Augmented reality.

  1. Motivation – The main purpose of learning is to develop personal knowledge and improve our engagement with the real world. Using Virtual reality handsets and AVR games will create interest and curiosity for the learners to learn more. Though they may just take it as fun, in the process they may gain new information on different issues such as history, culture, human anatomy among many other topics and subjects.
  2. Learning By Seeing And Doing Rather Than By Listening And Believing – Reality based technology allows the student to explore and interact with ‘real’ environment that would be impossible in just chalk and board setup. For instance, instead of just reading about archaeologists, learners can become historians through an AVR game to do the real thing. There are many other constructive games and immersive learning technology, which enables the learners to have an experience of their topic of study.
  3. Cost-effectiveness – Travelling to different regions, museums and participating in internship programs can be both expensive and time-consuming, but with virtual reality, students can travel abroad, visit museums, land in space virtually and have a learning experience in the virtual-real environment. Imagine with just a VR handset; a biology student can explore the marine creatures and habitats while at the lab.
  4. Risk-Free – Some real-world learning activities can be risky to the learner’s life, but they are possible and harmless using technology. For example, a geology student can vividly see how volcanic eruption occurs, or even a chemistry student perform explosive chemical reaction process in a virtual environment without getting hurt.

Apart from making education more real and exciting, reality-based education models will save on the cost of learning and improve learners thinking capacity and creativity.
